My Target
        At  the  end  of  this  activity, you  will  be  informed on  the principles of authentic assessment and its usefulness in the classroom.

My Task
       Authentic assessment is an alternative way of assessing students’ learning to be able to use it, you must have a deep understanding of it. To help you reach your goal, do the following task:

1.   Visit a classroom and interview the teacher on his/her experiences in using authentic assessment.
2.   Describe how the teacher uses the authentic assessment.
3.   Write a reflective journal on the activity.

I was observing the class of grade seven section banaba every Tuesday on their regular schedule 9:30 to 10:30 in the morning at Isabela National High School with Mrs. Luz Balao their science teacher. As my resource teacher I interviewed her about Authentic Assessment. 





MY INTERVIEW NOTES


For you madam, what is Authentic Assessment?
   
      Authentic Assessment is applying with your students the tasks given or you required with them as their teacher in real setting.


What are your experiences in using Authentic Assessment?
     I experienced a great effort and patient in applying this assessment with my students. I need to observe thoroughly their skills they apply during and up to the end of their performance or task given to them.


How do you score your students in this method of assessment?
      Scoring the students in this method of assessment is by using Scoring Rubrics. The criteria indicated in these scoring rubrics shall be announce or tell to the students in order for them to know how I will score them and motivate them also.







ANALYSIS
   1. What is Authentic Assessment? 
Authentic Assessment in a classroom is a method of assessing the learners or students applying with them the certain tasks in a real-world or real-life setting. It involves a direct examination of student’s ability to use their knowledge and skills in real-life situations. As I learned in our Prof.Ed. subject which is the Assessment of Student Learning 2, Authentic Assessment can be referred to performance-based assessment where if the students fulfill the task, their competence of the skills that need to observed can be measured directly.


            2. How was authentic assessment used? Was it used to measure learning through the product?

Authentic assessment was used not only to measure learning through the product but also through the process on how to come up with the product. It can be use depends on the orientations of the performance-based assessment are you going to use, because there are two orientations of this assessment the PROCESS-ORIENTED and PRODUCT-ORIENTED Performance-based assessment.




REFLECTION


 What are your insights and feelings about the use of authentic assessment?

Authentic Assessment is very significant in learning of the students. Using this method of assessment is involving the students in a real-life setting that can be helpful with them to prepare in real situations.


 Describe how the teacher used the authentic assessment?

As I observed to my resource teacher she used authentic assessment by giving to the students first what are the standards of the tasks she gave to be performed by the students. Those standards will be scored based on the criteria indicated in the scoring rubrics she prepared.  In this way her students will be motivated to do the task correctly.


How did you feel about the teacher’s experience in the use of authentic assessment?

For me the, the teacher’s experience in the use of authentic assessment was very effective for the learning of the students. She let the students to know her standards in measuring the task she will give to the students, in that way the students are being motivated to do their part and cooperate in the task given. The teacher was very appreciating for being patient as she really observed the performance of the students during and up to the end of the certain task.


What could be the gains of the students and teachers in using authentic assessment?

·        For the students, they will gain of course additional knowledge and skills, also confidence on how to deal with real life setting. As for this method of assessment the teacher prepare the students to deal with a real life situations. Students are given an opportunity to engage their selves actively in the certain tasks required to them.

·         For the teachers, they will gain systematic scoring for the certain tasks that they required with their students through the criteria that she gave with his/her students. Through the use of authentic assessment the teachers can also improve her teaching strategies. Also, through this method of assessment it can provides valuable information to the teacher on student progress as well as the success of instruction.  


Which part of the teacher’s use of authentic assessment do you feel like improving or revising?

There’s no need to revise on how my resource teacher use the authentic assessment because she was applying it well with her students as I observed. She always gave her standards with the certain task she will require to her students before performing this, in that way she was motivating her students. She makes it clear to the students.
