My Target

MY TASK
Image result for TASK clipartAfter your observation experience you now have a deeply and principled understanding of the concepts of authentic assessment used in the classroom. You can now go through the process of designing performance assessment by the following these steps:
1.      Visit a class and identify performance-based activities.
2.      Choose one performance-based activity and study its process.
3.      Design a performance assessment plan for the activity you have chosen.
4.      Collect samples of performance-based assessment tools.
5.      Reflect on your experience.

MY TOOLS
Image result for tools clipart            In observing a class, take note of important observations of the performance-based activity in the classroom. Make a checklist of the important things you want to consider in your assessment planning. Use the activity form provided for you. You may use format of process-oriented assessment that you have taken in your assessment 2 class. The rubrics are part and parcel of this assessment plan.

OBSERVATION NOTES

Name of the School Observed:   Isabela National High School
School Address:                            Claravall St., San Vicente, Ilagan, Isabela
Date Visited:                                   February 17, 2015
Grade/Year Level:                          Grade 7 - Banaba
Subject Area:                                 Science

Describe in bullets the performance-based activity you observe.

In this episode the performance-based activity I observed in the class is about their topic which is “The Layers of Atmosphere”.

  • The teacher grouped her class into five (5) groups.
  • After grouping the class she gave each group an envelope.
  • She gave the instructions of the activity to the class after giving the envelope. The instructions were given clearly.
  • These are the instructions: in the envelope given there are rumbled letters, the students must arrange the letters according to the names of the layers of atmosphere in two (2) minutes.
  • The students followed the instructions correctly.
  • This activity serves as motivation for the students before they will start their lesson about atmosphere.

MY CHECKLIST

These are the important things I wish to consider in my performance-based assessment plan:

ü There must be a purpose for where the results will be used.
ü Knowing who will be my target for me to limit my assessment with their level.
ü It must consider what am I assessing or learning skills in order to determine their weaknesses or strengths.
ü There must be learning targets where the students can gain in this assessment.
ü The objectives of this assessment must have to consider the three (3) domains of learning.
ü Instructions must be clearly stated to the students.
ü The standards or criteria must be stated also to the students for them to motivate. Also, these standards will be my basis to judge their performances systematically.
ü Time allotment and materials must consider also.

NOTES ON MY PROCESS-ORIENTED ASSESSMENT PLAN

What are the best features of my process-oriented performance assessment design?

These are the best features of my process-oriented performance assessment design:
  •           It measures what it intends to measure.
  •           It limits only in the level of the students I am assessing.
  •           It has appropriate learning skills and learning targets.
  •           It considers the three (3) domains of learning.
  •           It contains performance characteristics and objectives.
  •    It has clear instructions.
  •    Scoring Rubrics or criteria was considered to have a systematic judgement in the students’ performance.
  •    Time and materials are considered.

What specific conditions are necessary for a successful use of my process-oriented performance assessment design?

These are the specific conditions necessary for a successful use of my process-oriented performance assessment design, the instructions need to be specified and clearly stated to the students for them to understand and follow the task given to them. The objectives must be given also for them to know what they can gain as their learning in this specific task. The domains of learning (cognitive, psychomotor and affective) must be considered also as their learning outcomes. It must also have scoring rubrics as the standards and should be stated to the students for them to be motivated, and it serves as my guidelines to ensure that my judgements are accurate, consistent, and fair.

What basic points should the user of this design consider?

In designing process-oriented performance assessment the basic points should the user must consider are to determine the purpose for where the results will be used, who will be the target of this assessment, what must be assessed, and what are the learning competencies or objectives of this assessment considering the domains of learning. Also, the user must consider the scoring rubrics or standards as basic point in this method of assessment to have a basis in systematic judgement. Time and materials must be considered also.

Image result for analysis clipart  1.      Why do teachers need to give attention to the students’ process-oriented tasks? Why do they need to assess them?

Teachers need to give attention to the students’ process oriented tasks because this method of assessment focuses on the process itself and especially it is based on observable behaviours. It involves direct examination or observation of students’ ability to stay on the task and ability to use their knowledge, skills and how they behave while the performance is ongoing.

Teachers need to assess them in this method of assessment in order to measure the ability of the students to perform the task that corresponds to the given instructional objectives and to know if the students follow the given instructions. Also, to measure how was the understanding of the students in this method of assessment and to determine their difficulties.

2.      In what conditions can the process-oriented performance assessment be used appropriately?

The process-oriented performance assessment is used appropriately in these conditions: it must have the purpose and who will be the target, there must be learning competencies considering the three (3) domains of learning. The instruction must be clearly stated to the students, and also have a scoring rubrics to have an accurate, consistent and fair judgement and this must be stated to the students in order for them to know the standards of the task given to them and also to motivate them.

Make reflections on your feelings and thoughts about the observations made in this FS.

In this FS which is the Field Study 5 is about the Learning Assessment Strategies. We are going to observe our resource teacher assigned to us on what methods and strategies of assessment she will be using in assessing her students. We are assigned on this task to have experiences for us to learn on how we are going to assess our students when we will become a teacher someday.

As I was assigned to the class of Grade 7 – Banaba under Mrs. Luz Balao I observed that the practice teacher assigned to her whom she was assisting was using variety of assessment methods and strategies in her class. The teacher was using different assessment tools and strategies appropriate to the assessment methods she will be using related to their lessons. She was assessing the class before they will start their new lessons as motivation. She let her students to recite if she was throwing questions during discussions about their lessons or recalling their past lessons. She was giving announced quizzes, exams, and activities. She always checking the notebooks of her students to monitor if the class take note important details about their lessons and if they made their assignments. Through her assessment strategies she was assessing the understanding and learning performances of her students if they really do goods in their class. Based on my observations the teacher was really using variety of assessment methods and strategies appropriately to her class.

The Field Study 5 is the application on what we have learned on Assessment of Student Learning 1 and 2 Prof.Ed subjects. Through this observational task in FS5 I learned a lot on what assessment methods and strategies appropriate to use in measuring the understanding and learning of the students. Also, I learned how assessment influences learning and provides fair and credible reporting of students' achievements on the lessons being discussed to them.
