My Target

At the end of this activity, you will be competent in identifying and naming different assessment methods used in the classroom.

My Task

·         Observe at least three classes and make a list of the assessment methods used by teachers.
·         In my list, classify assessment methods as to conventional and authentic and alternative.
·         Describe how each assessment method was used, including my personal observations.
·         Confer with my FS teacher for the assessment list.
·         Reflect on my experience.

My Tools

As you visit schools and observe assessment practices in at least three classes, document your observations using the activity forms provided for you in this reference. For your pen-and-paper test items, customize a table of specification, and prepare the test material based on the prescriptions of the school where you do class observation.

Performance-based assessment
(Rubric Scoring)

Ø The subject matter was about sound. The class was group into four (4) groups. Their task was to make a jingle using improvised musical instruments made by them using indigenous materials and performed it by group according to their group numbers. The teacher gave this activity to her students as they learned the sound literally in order for them to observe what is sound in real life situation.

Ø In this method used by the teacher there is a rubric scoring where all the criteria are indicated in order for her to grade or evaluate each groups properly to come up with unbiased judgement.

ØThe teacher conducted this method twice for this day to account or evaluate her students learning about their lessons being discussed.

     ·        First, the teacher gave a simple individual activity to her students about their topic yesterday.

Reporting

Oral Recitation

Ø The teacher grouped her class into four (4) groups and assigned topics for each groups for them to report or discuss in front of their class. She used this method to train her students to speak in front, and to gain their confidence. When the students are done in reporting that is the time that she will supplement some informations regarding to the topic being reported by the students.

Ø While discussing the topics;  and  every after one topic the teacher will ask some questions for the oral recitation of the students to evaluate if her students really listened and understood what are being discussed or reported by their classmates.

Reporting

Oral Recitation

   *    It is used based on the topic they discussed which is the “sound”. The teacher grouped her students into four (4) groups. Each groups should make a jingle using improvised musical instruments made of indigenous materials. In this method the teacher used a rubric scoring where all the criteria are indicated in order for her to grade or evaluate each groups.

*     It is the traditional method commonly used by the teachers. This method was used through by group and individually assessing the students to monitor if the students understand their lessons.

*    These methods were used while discussing the topics; and every after one topic.  The teacher will ask some questions for the oral recitation of the students to evaluate if her students really listened and understood what are being discussed or reported by their classmates.

Analysis
1.       Was there a variety of assessment methods used by the teacher? How relevant was/were the assessment method/s used?

As what I observed for three (3) hours on December 02, 09 and 12 (one hour each days of observation) with my resource teacher, yes there are variety of assessment methods she used to assessed her students. She used different assessment methods to assessed her students’ achievements or learning during and after discussing regarding to their subject matters. The assessment methods my resource teacher’s used were relevant to the subject matters she were discuss. They are relevant because the teacher assessed her students accordingly or based to their subject matters that they discussed. The assessment methods she used were related to the topics that they discussed to evaluate if her students really understand their lessons.

2.       Do you think the expected students’ learning behaviours indicated in the objectives were properly and appropriately assessed through those assessment methods?

The expected students’ learning behaviours indicated in the objectives were properly and appropriately assessed through the assessment methods used by my resource teacher, because as what I observed my resource teacher assessed her students during and after discussing their lessons. She assessed her students using different methods based on how she taught the subject matters related to the learning objectives, because how she taught the subject matter it should be based on the objectives of this subject matter where students’ learning behaviours were indicated.

My Reflections

Assessment is very important for us to come up with good and unbiased judgment with the class. It is our way in evaluating the achievements or learning of the class based on the lessons we are discussing to them. We need to used different assessment methods accordingly to the subject matters we discussed with our class. Those methods should be appropriate with what are we going to evaluate with our class and with the learning behaviours indicated in our objectives to come up with our learning targets to our students. Those assessment methods that we are going to use should be relevant to our subject matters in order to assess our class appropriately.
